Established The Foundation
Established The Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation to positively impact the Northeast Ohio community with earnings from Fairmont Minerals, which Chuck Fowler co-founded in 1986.

Formed the Board of Trustees
Formed the founding Board of Trustees comprised of Chuck Fowler, Char Fowler, Chann Fowler-Spellman, and Holley Martens.
Facilitated Early Grantmaking
Facilitated most of the early grantmaking through Char and Chuck, focusing on Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Support and the Arts.
2006
Donated $1 Million
Donated $1 million to University Hospitals (UH) Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to support the nation’s first-ever chair in AYA Cancer Research.
2011
Pledged $16 Million
Pledged $16 million toward creating the Angie Fowler Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Institute and Angie’s Rooftop Garden at UH.


Spending Policy
Approved a spending policy that allowed for more than the required 5% on annual grantmaking.
2012
Improved Grants Process
Introduced a more formal and organized grants process while transitioning toward responsive grantmaking after Chann and Holley began working at the Foundation together.

Expanded focus areas to distribute grants in the areas of AYA Cancer, the Arts, Education, and Health.




Engaged with Affinity Organizations

Angie’s Institute
April 2014: Announced the official opening of Angie Fowler Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Institute at University Hospital Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital Institute at University Hospitals.

Pledged $6.7 Million to Case Comprehensive Cancer Center
2014: Pledged $6.7 million through a combined Foundation and personal grant to the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center to establish the Angie Fowler AYA Research Program to further strengthen the Angie Fowler AYA Cancer Institute at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Distributed $4 million (9.88% of assets)
Distributed a total of $12.6 million in 2014/2015 across 158 grants after reviewing 221 applications during this two-year period.
Networking Event
2015: Created a networking event with the Foundation Center (now Candid) for grantees to meet and network with several small-staffed foundations.

Hired Bridget De Leon
Hired Bridget De Leon as the Foundation’s first full-time staff member.

Partnered with LAND Studio
Partnered with LAND Studio to underwrite temporary public art installations for over three years at various locations throughout the City of Cleveland, with the inaugural installation by Cracking Art.


2017
Distributed $6.3 Million
Distributed $6.3 million (19.33% of assets) across 141 grants after reviewing 200 applications.
Exploration to Expand Focus Areas
Held regular meetings of Board and family members to discuss possible expansion of focus areas to allow grantmaking in other areas of need and interest.
2018
Distributed $4.2 Million
Distributed $4.2 million (14.64% of assets) across 155 grants after reviewing 226 applications.
Formal Adoption of an Equity Lens
After attending various Racial Equity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (RE-DEI) trainings, the Foundation formally integrated an equity lens into the applications, reporting, and review process.

Board & Family Retreat
Held retreat for board, staff, and family members to continue focus areas discussion and gathered data on what other funders were focusing on.
First 3rd Generation Mini-Grant Cycle
Launched the Foundation’s first mini-grant cycle through the Fowler family’s third generation, focusing on Environment and resulting in 4 grants totaling $20,000.

Second 3rd Generation Mini-Grant Cycle
Facilitated second mini-grant cycle through the third generation, focusing on Criminal Justice and resulting in four grants totaling $20,000.
Dedicate 2020 to Learning
Voted to dedicate 2020 to learning, dreaming, and evaluation after assessing previous two years. Informed grantees mid-year about the intent to pause new grants, allowing them to plan ahead. Extended or renewed most current grants for an additional year.

2020
Distributed $3.6 Million
Distributed $3.6 million (13.26% of assets) across 123 grants despite a pause in the application process. Included 44 COVID-related grants to meet community needs during the pandemic.
Waived Grantee Reporting Requirements
Waived grantee reporting requirements and amended all grants to support general operating expenses to allow greater flexibility during COVID-19 pandemic.
Learning, Dreaming, & Evaluation
Conducted research and learned from organizations and leaders in many areas, including environment, social and criminal justice, arts, mental health, and homelessness.
Self Evaluation of Trust-Based Philanthropy Practices
Performed an internal audit of the Foundation’s trust-based efforts and activities with Vu Le, from Nonprofit AF.
Le’s a writer, speaker, and collaborator that promotes social justice by developing leaders of color, strengthening organizations led by communities of color, and fostering collaboration among diverse communities.
Hired Donovan Young
Hired Donovan Young as a Fellow and eventually the Foundation’s second full-time staff member.

Distributed $3.7 million (12.82% of assets) across 127 grants after reviewing 209 applications.
Revised Focus Areas
Began grantmaking according to a revised set of focus areas: Arts, Criminal Justice, AYA Cancer, and Reproductive Health/Rights.

Formalized Philanthropy Processes
Formalized trust-based philanthropy processes throughout all operations, including eliminating grantee reporting requirements and encouraging general operating and multi-year requests.
Rolling/Monthly Grant Cycle
Added the Rolling/Monthly Grant Cycle—a monthly grant process for smaller organizations and/or those with immediate need-based requests.
